Statement

In Search of the Moment’s Truth

The question of the relationship between matter, time and change is the central theme of my work. Sculpture is not seen as an image or an isolated freeze of a rigid moment but as a description of a process. A process which deals with nature and the laws of nature, with the complex physical correlations of our world and the specific viewpoint of man thereupon.

In the center of the view is the fleetingness of the moment. My work looks
for an expression of the moment in the space-time continuum. For this I developed a formal language which makes possible in one and the same plastic description the moments and periods of time. It’s always about snapshots of great dynamic processes, I always go in search of a kind of “The Moments Truth”.

Biography

Working between Germany and her native Chile, Alejandra Ruddoff’s practice unfolds across landscapes, materials, and cultural contexts. Her large-scale sculptures inhabit both architecture and open terrain, tracing lines along interurban routes in South America while shaping public spaces in European cities. Her work Hommage an den Wind is included in Phaidon’s Destination Art Top 500.

Moving between continents, her works emerge in dialogue with place: mutatis mutandis was presented at the 2017 Venice Biennale and shortly thereafter in Santiago de Chile.

Ruddoff works with wood, iron, steel, and bronze, while also developing engravings, prints, photographs, videos, and 3D-based forms in Berlin. Her works are held in collections including the Museum of Fine Arts, Santiago. A former DAAD fellow, she was appointed to the Chilean Academy of Fine Arts.
